My irrational fear part II

Explanation of my irrational fear continued:

A team of 20 men can ride a blimp at any time. Usually two are sufficient to pilot it, unless of course, you have one stupid, over-zealous pilot who thinks he is confident enough to handle the giant airship. That would be a mistake.

If you really want to know, a Goodyear blimp called the Stars and Stripes crashed due to a single pilot's inadequate in-flight planning/decision which resulted in the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommends two people to fly the airship.

The blimp's sole profession is to take and develop aerial photographs of various sporting events. The stunning photographs taken by the blimps are remarkable; however, there are other ways to get more lucid photographs. Various high-resolution, satellite alternatives are available for such events. For instance, Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) or IKONOS are viable alternatives to blimps.

However, imaging satellites can only image the Earth. The image then needs to be relayed to Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) and then downlinked to a ground station. From the ground station, the image would then have to be sent to the sporting event trucks. While this takes only a few minutes, it is still very expensive.

The sad reality is that we are stuck with blimps until image relaying from satellites becomes a cheaper alternative, or until some other imaging creature is invented or discovered. This leaves me to cower in fear and repulsion everytime I see a blimp.

I beg the readers, not to judge me based on my fear, but on the facts presented. In the immortal words of John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what blimps can do for you - ask how you can render them obsolete." I ask you not to laugh at me when you see me in public. You too probably have an irrational fear of something. Sympathize with me. Pray for me. Let's reach some state of catharsis.

Oh the Huge Manatee

We should keep the ball rolling with this theme and do a follow-up that addresses blimps, zeppelins, derigables and their relationship with music. Perhaps an interperetation of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick?"
