Review of the Beatles "Love" by Cirque du Soleil

For my money, nothing celebrates the greatness of the Fab Four like a bunch of freaky Japanese acrobats and contortionists dressed like French clowns suspended from a love swing.  Such was the experience when Bn'R took it's tour to fabulous Las Vegas last week.  We spent over $100 each to see the show which has received rave reviews (from Paul McCartney).  Our seats were about as far back as you can get, but the place was set up so that there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Joe noticed early on that each headrest was equipped with tiny speakers, which was most convenient.  From the moment the show started, I knew that we were in for a wacky trip.  If any of you have seen Cirque du Soleil before, you will recall that they usually include some fantastic acrobatics, interesting dances, juggling, homoerotic flying 69's, etc.

This show felt more like an overindulgent interpretive dance meant to tickle the balls of a production bigwig who has a hard-on for the Fab Four.  Most of the magic that usually comes from other Cirque du Soleil shows seemed to be missing.  I won't lie, if I hadn't experience Cirque du Soleil before, I might have enjoyed this a lot more, but it didn't have the same appeal.  The music was great, obviously, considering the soundtrack was all Beatles music, tastefully remixed, but normally at a CdS show, you can expect a live orchestra to play very ominous and energetic tunes which add to the tension of the high risks taken by the performers.

Here is the setlist:

I don't want to ruin the experience for you if you were truly interested in seeing the show.  As a standalone show, not to be compared with other Cirque Du Soleil performances, it gets an 8 out of 10.  When you compare against prior shows, a 6 out of 10 will have to suffice.

The quote of the night happened during the VERY trippy version of Octopus's Garden by Joe.

Joe: "Did we do drugs?"
