Lost steals American Idol's thunder

For six years, American Idol has been a ratings juggernaut. It has capitalized on America's obsession with taking ordinary people and putting them in extraordinarily overproduced situations.  We have seen many stars come out of Idol, such as Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, William Hong, that fat black guy, Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul's drug addiction (I'd still fuck her), San-Gina and now Jordin Sparks.  Idol was predicted to post ridiculous ratings numbers, while Lost was trending to fall well below prior season finales.  Due to the excellent writing on Lost in the past 4 weeks, it's audience came by the masses to view the final episode of the third season.  While not coming close to American Idol's 30 million viewers (remember that it isn't as accessible as Idol), Lost was able to take a huge chunk out of Idol's audience.

This is perfectly justified when you look at how many fantastic moments Lost contributed to the annals of television history on Wednesday.  Let's recap (spoiler alert if you missed it for whatever reason):
  • Sayid, Bernard and Jin kill 7 Others
  • Penelope warns Charlie that Naomi isn't who she says she is
  • Jack kicks the living shit out of Ben
  • Alex and Danielle are reunited as mother and daughter
  • Juliet plants one on Jack
  • Hurley is a stone cold killer....kind of
  • Sawyer executes Tom
  • Walt appears to Locke
  • Charlie drowns
  • Jack is a pill addict
  • Jack loves Kate
  • Locke is a true stone cold killer
  • Flash-forward (Craig saw it coming)
What did American Idol contribute?:
  • Another pre-packaged pop star is going to invade our airwaves for 1.2 years
  • Ryan Seacrest is still short
  • Paula Abdul broke her nose
  • Randy Jackson is annoying
  • Simon Cowell is sassy, but has lost his edge
