Tommy Tutone causes war between plumbers
If there is one band that I never thought I'd be writing about, it is Tommy Tutone. We are all familiar with their unforgettable tune, "Jenny (867-5309)". Some of us can shamefully say that they have performed it in a cover band. Others will admit to singing it to themselves. If you attended any college bar in the United States over the past twenty years, you have probably heard it performed alongside other favorites such as Jessie's Girl, Summer of '69, and of course the Tom Petty favorite, American Girl. But one thing is safe to say.......you have never associated the song with plumbing.
According to Yahoo News, two separate plumbers are fighting over the name:
"Two years ago, Gem Plumbing & Heating of Lincoln, R.I., trademarked the phone number in the early 1980s hit, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Gem acquired the number in Rhode Island when its original owner, Brown University, gave up 867-5309 after growing weary of the constant prank calls."
And it gets better:
Gem's number works in the 401 area code in Rhode Island and the 617 area code in southern Massachusetts. But Florida-based Clockwork Home Services, also a plumbing company, uses a toll-free version of 867-5309 in New England. They argue a company can only trademark a vanity number, like 1-800-FLOWERS."
It brings a happy little tear to my eye when I think that two different plumbers are fighting over a song written about some easy chick's number being written on the stall of a crapper in some sleazy bar. Who knows, maybe twenty years from now, a couple of South Philly construction companies will argue over who has the right to use Bob's cell phone number, because they saw it next a glory hole, with the words, "The fun's not over yet" prominently underneath it.
