The Killers 4/27/07 Tweeter Center at the Waterfront
A white sheet drops in front of the stage and a remix version of Sam's Town is playing. Shots of the band in LED lights form on the white sheet. Other images flash on the sheet, the Sam's Town artwork, the Vegas Neon Cowboy, more shots of the band. The back of the sheet lights blue and the band becomes visible standing in their appropriate spots.
Brandon Flowers, lead singer, jumps forward and begins to conduct his orchestra, however a sheet malfunction causes him to jump into it. The sheet then drops and you see him looking at Ronnie Vannucci, the drummer, laughing. Vannucci begins to play the opening drum beat to Sam's Town, while Mark Stoermer and Dave Keuning gradually join Vannucci.
The stage has various wooden boxes, as if to resemble a Western Saloon. Brandon is dressed the part as an old western bartender, black shirt, black pants, black cowboy boots, black vest, and a cowboy tie. The rest of the band is less committed to the theme with Vannucci looking like he just rolled out of bed.
They follow the Sam's Town album almost exclusively for the first few songs, moving seamlessly from Sam's Town to Enterlude to When You Were Young. When You Were Young received a loud scream from the mixed aged crowd which ranged from 13 to 50. The band was on point for every song. There was little banter between Brandon and the crowd which allowed the music to do the talking for them. Politics, band introductions, and even the proverbial "Hey Camden" was left out.
Even though the interaction between the crowd was minimal, you can still see how this band has quickly evolved. I was lucky enough to see this band on the first U.S. tour and they were shy, introverted, and played only to each other. They hardly acknowledged the crowd existed. They spent some time opening up for U2 in Europe, which saw them gaining larger exposure and playing to larger crowds. This gave them confidence and more stage presence. Now you don't see them playing for each other, but to the 9,000 in attendance. A welcomed surprise when Mark steps forward and plays the beginning riff of Mr. Brightside or when Brandon begins the synthesizer part on Somebody Told Me.
The Killers have pulled a Green Day on the Sam's Town tour. They added another person. This person sits in the back of the stage and rounds out the sound. He looked like the guy from the Apple vs PC commercials and he played everything from piano and keyboards to acoustic and electric guitars. This guy was never introduced, due to the fact their were no introductions.
A lot of criticism has come in the form of the new album and its lack of any Hot Fuss sounding songs. I will admit that Sam's Town takes some getting used to and it shows a band that tried maybe too hard, to emulate their idols (U2 and Bruce Springsteen). Another criticism is the lack of an inspiring bass line. Having stood on the Dave Keuning's side I can tell you that is not the case. On songs like Uncle Johnny and For Reasons Unknown, you can hear a distinct American Western sound. There is almost a Lone Ranger sound in the bass line.
The band was on all night. Brandon's voice was in prime form. Dave and Ronnie's sound was never tighter while Mark's guitar was solid throughout. Each time the songs were brought alive with enthusiasm and confidence. Audibly they can be appreciated on the albums they put out, but to true love the band, you have to witness them live. It was another solid concert from the Killers.
In typical Philadelphia fashion, there was a giant fight outside the Tweeter Center between four drunken meathead construction workers and the Camden police. No matter if you win this fight, you lose. But these douches don't understand that. Their asses were quickly handed to them and they were carted off to await charges ranging from disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assaulting police officers...at a fucking Killers show! Big tough men.
